Fugazi

Ian Mackaye's long-running indie rock band perfected D.I.Y. ethos, championing "straight-edge" while incorporating dub, experimental, and much else.

Biography

Fugazi's roots lie in the early-1980s straight-edge punk rock band Minor Threat, led by Ian MacKaye. (MacKaye and bandmate Jeff Nelson started Dischord Records, which became one of the most important US punk labels.) By the late '80s, MacKaye had moved on to Fugazi, who championed the straight-edge agenda while incorporating everything from dub to avant-garde experimentalism in their music. They gained a bigger audience than Minor Threat and were a key influence on succeeding generations of punks and heavy rockers.
