This former Beatle made up half of pop music’s greatest ever songwriting partnership; he went on to a successful solo career.
Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney had the most successful solo career. McCartney never attained much critical respect, especially when compared to his former partner John Lennon. Then again, he pursued a different path than Lennon, deciding early on that he wanted to be in a rock band; little more than a year after the Beatles' breakup, McCartney formed Wings. By the late '70s, many critics were taking potshots at McCartney's effortlessly melodic songcraft, but that didn't stop the public from buying his records. From the '90s onward, McCartney recorded less frequently, concentrating on projects like his first classical recording, a techno album, and the Beatles' Anthology. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
