The Marvelettes

Motown girl group the Marvelettes scored a Number One smash with "Please Mr. Postman," later covered by the Beatles.

Biography

Motown girl group the Marvelettes scored the label's first Number One single with "Please Mr. Postman," a song covered repeatedly in the ensuing decade, most notably by the Beatles. Featuring Gladys Horton and Wanda Young on lead vocals, the Marvelettes also found early-'60s chart success with the poppy "Beechwood 4-5789," "Playboy," and the inevitable "Twistin' Postman." Effectively splitting the difference between more polished label mates the Supremes and the grittier Martha & the Vandellas, the Marvelettes issued several other singles in the classic Motown vein, the best of which, 1965's "I'll Keep Holding On," strongly recalls the Supremes' "Nothing But Heartaches." The group split in 1970, shortly after the departure of Horton.
