Biography

The solo debut from Take That's Robbie Williams, Life Thru a Lens (1997), was a big hit in Britain, prompting his second, I've Been Expecting You (1998). The Ego Has Landed, a U.S.-only compilation designed for breaking Williams to American audiences, was released in 1999. Sing When You're Winning followed in 2000, while a big-band album of standards (Swing When You're Winning) appeared a year later. Escapology (2003) sold millions in Europe, though it failed to persuade American audiences. Although Intensive Care (2005) topped charts in Europe, a certain creative atrophy was setting in. Within a year, however, Williams released Rudebox, a dance album that hit number one across Europe. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
