Fates Warning played a large role in developing a musical movement known as “thinking man’s metal”.
Formed in 1983, Hartford, Connecticut’s Fates Warning (alongside Seattle’s Queensrÿche) spearheaded a musical movement known as “thinking man’s metal,” which later evolved into “progressive metal.” In fact, the band served as a primary influence on the definitive progressive metal band, Dream Theater. Consisting of core members Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos (guitar), and Joey Vera (bass) for much of the band’s career, Fates Warning’s catalogue became more complex and diverse as it expanded. Having never truly broken into the mainstream like its successor, Fates Warning’s albums are nonetheless reissued every few years, as an appreciation for the band’s work grows.
