Seminal British prog band whose ambitious, classical-tinged art rock gradually became more accessible by the '80s.
One of the most successful rock acts of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, Genesis enjoyed a longevity exceeded only by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, and matched in progressive rock circles only by Yes. In the process, they provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. The ambitious 1974 double-LP The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway marked the culmination of their early history, while the 1986 album Invisible Touch was their most commercially successful album, driven by a quintet of Top Ten U.S. singles, including the chart-topping title track. ~ Bruce Eder
