Highly influential Swedish prog-metal outfit formed in the early 1990s.
Opeth added progressive influences and acoustic instrumentation to their brand of Swedish death metal. Orchid and Morningrise appeared respectively in 1995 and 1996, but it was their third album, 1998's My Arms, Your Hearse, that established the band as a leading force in progressive death metal. 1999's Still Life displayed even more prog rock influences, followed by Blackwater Park in 2001 and Deliverance in 2002. In 2003, Opeth released Damnation, an album almost completely devoid of heavy metal trappings. Ghost Reveries arrived in 2005, followed by Watershed in 2008. Opeth shifted stylistic gears dramatically for 2011's Heritage; it was the sound of the band leaving death metal behind. ~ Mike DaRonco
