Utopia

Perennially underrated American progressive rock band formed in the mid 1970s by Todd Rundgren.

Biography

Formed by Todd Rundgren in 1974, Utopia was an eclectic prog outfit heavily influenced by genre heavyweights Yes, but not limited to one sound or style when searching for inspiration. The band's debut, TODD RUNDGREN’S UTOPIA, comprised lengthy and complex pieces in the spirit of the era and was quickly followed by a live album. Upping the ante for their third album, Utopia released the epic, high-concept RA in 1977. In addition to being the band’s most extravagant release, the album was supported by a multi-million dollar live show. OOPS! WRONG PLANET arrived later that year and comprised shorter, more accessible new wave-style tracks. ADVENTURES IN UTOPIA brought the band a minor hit in 1980 with “Set Me Free,” but they would remain, at best, a successful cult act until their break up less than a decade later.
