A Flock of Seagulls

British new wave synth act known as much for their outrageous haircuts as their infectious hits.

Biography

With the advent of MTV, pop music in the 1980s became more about visual image than ever before, and one band that caught that wave was the redoubtable A Flock of Seagulls. Their 1982 debut contained, among other compelling numbers, the infectious synth-pop hit "I Ran (So Far Away)." That song's accompanying video featured the band in all their shiny-vinyled glory, with singer Mike Score sporting a unique, airborne hairstyle that got more outrageous with each subsequent video. While they ruled the airwaves for a time, subsequent albums did not fare as well as their debut, and by 1986 the band had called it quits. Score attempted to revive the band on a few occasions, but their heyday remains those crazy '80s.
