This mid-'90s band's sunny, straightforward sound connected in with audiences weary of grunge bleakness.
Hootie & the Blowfish's mainstream pop variation of blues-rock brought the band to the top of the charts in 1995. Formed at the University of South Carolina, the group features lead vocalist/guitarist Darius Rucker, Mark Bryan, Dean Felber, and Jim "Soni" Sonefeld; the name refers to two friends of the band, not Rucker and the group itself. [roviLink="MW"]Cracked Rear View, the group's first album, became a massive success, going platinum several times over on the strength of top ten singles "Hold My Hand,""Let Her Cry," and "Only Wanna Be with You." Subsequent records were strong, but failed to match the success of the band's debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
