Best-selling rock group blended slick electronic pop with Shirley Manson’s emotive vocals.
The brainchild of producers Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana's breakthrough album, Nevermind, in 1991), Garbage built on the sonic landscapes of My Bloody Valentine, Curve, and Sonic Youth by adding a distinct sense of pop songcraft. After recruiting Scottish vocalist Shirley Manson, the band began climbing the charts in 1995 with modern rock singles like "Queer," "Only Happy When It Rains," and "Stupid Girl." Garbage's second album, Version 2.0, appeared in 1998 and received two Grammy nominations, while both Beautiful Garbage and Bleed Like Me were released during the first half of the 2000s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
