One-time prominent punk rock frontman, leading MTV hitmaker by 1980s.
Billy Idol was one the first pop/rock artists to achieve massive success in the early '80s due to a then brand-new U.S. television network, MTV. Mixing his bad-boy good looks with pop hooks, dance beats, and punk attitude -- left over from his time spent as the frontman of Generation X -- Idol quickly rocketed to stardom. Released in 1984, Rebel Yell was the singer's best-selling album, eventually going double platinum and establishing him as an arena headliner stateside. His next three major releases all went platinum, but hard living derailed his career and almost proved fatal. He recorded sporadically during the late '90s and early 2000s, including 2005's Devil's Playground. ~ Greg Prato
