Gladys Knight

Rough-voiced soul singer who after scoring massive hits with the Pips began pursuing the inevitable solo career in 1989.

Biography

One of the great soul singers, Gladys Knight hit her commercial stride when she moved to Motown in 1966. Steeped in the gospel tradition, Knight & the Pips developed into one of Motown's most dependable acts. With Norman Whitfield providing the production and much of the songwriting, the Pips scored big hits. In 1973, she had her biggest Motown hit with "Neither One of Us." Shortly afterward, Knight & the Pips left Motown and were briefly superstars in 1973 and 1974. Her days as a high-charting star ended after the mid-'70s, and she moved toward an easy listening, adult contemporary direction. ~ Richie Unterberger
