NYC vocalist quietly stormed the R&B charts during the 1980s with her soul-jazz blend.
Born in Harlem in 1954, the Latina singer Angela Bofill began her musical career as a vocalist with the Dance Theatre of Harlem Chorus. Her 1978 solo debut, ANGIE, was a highly listenable blend of jazz and R&B, a style she was to pursue with much commercial success throughout the 1980s. Though her appeal has been limited to the jazz and R&B charts, she has garnered numerous industry awards over the decades, and counts many prominent pop, jazz, and R&B artists among her admirers. Her career was interrupted in 2006, when she was stricken with the first of two strokes that left her partially paralyzed.
