Anita Baker

Jazz-tinged soul singer achieved both pop success and a cult following in the '80s & '90s.

Biography

With her classy, refined brand of romantic soul, Anita Baker was one of the definitive quiet storm singers of the '80s. Gifted with a strong, supple alto, she was influenced not only by R&B, but jazz, gospel, and traditional pop, which gave her smooth and mellow, but hardly lifeless, music a distinctly adult sophistication. Her 1986 major-label debut, Rapture, was a Grammy-winning smash, appealing to both urban and adult contemporary listeners and producing two all-time quiet storm classics: "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love." Her equally stylish 1988 follow-up, Giving You the Best That I Got, spawned more R&B staples. ~ Steve Huey
