Macy Gray

Contemporary R&B artist with a gritty delivery somewhere between Billie Holiday and Tina Turner.

Biography

Macy Gray parlayed a unique voice and outlandish style into R&B stardom, appealing to audiences of all colors in search of a fresh alternative to mainstream soul. Released in the summer of 1999, her debut, On How Life Is, won glowing reviews and great word-of-mouth; Gray received two Grammy nominations, and the single "I Try" proved to be an enormous hit. The Id (2001) was a determined effort to play up the crazy side of Gray's image; it entered the charts at number 11 and quickly went gold. The Trouble with Being Myself (2003) was also a flop in commercial terms, but Big (2007) fared slightly better. ~ Steve Huey
