Popular Hendrix-inspired rocker keeping the classic FM torch burning bright into the 2000s; also incorporates soul and R&B influences into his work.
There may have been other "retro" rock acts before him, but Lenny Kravitz was one of the first to not be pigeonholed as he touched upon such genres as soul, funk, reggae, hard rock, psychedelic, folk, and ballads over the years. His 1989 debut, Let Love Rule, proved a surprise hit thanks to the success of the title track. His 1991 sophomore effort, Mama Said, which was even stronger than its predecessor, highlighted by the Curtis Mayfield-esque soul ballad "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over." His third album, Are You Gonna Go My Way (1993), is often considered his finest. ~ Greg Prato
