California blues-based hard rock quintet at the fringe of hair metal who scored pop hits in the '90s.
Like their eccentric namesake, the band Tesla has always operated slightly outside the mainstream. In an era when glam-metal ruled the airwaves and MTV, the hard-rocking Sacramento-based band stuck to their own brand of melodic hard rock, rife with probing lyrics, evocative imagery, and thoughtful, classical-based guitar riffs. After garnering impressive reviews for their 1986 debut, and scoring a top ten hit in 1990 with the progressively wandering opus "Love Song," the band also set a precedent by releasing an all-acoustic, mostly-covers live album that featured another top ten in the '70s protest anthem "Signs." The group put in a solid decade of recording and quietly dissolved in the mid '90s, but have reformed several times, releasing live and covers albums, as well as an iTunes-only studio album.
