Candlebox

Darker, swampier grunge band distinguished itself amidst a sea of Seattle alternative rockers in the '90s.

Biography

When “You” hit the MTV airwaves in 1994, with the pleading, gravelly vocals of Kevin Martin and its swampy rock tones, it seemed at once familiar and hauntingly new. While Candlebox came out of the crowded Seattle grunge scene, the rockers boasted a distinctive sound, their torch songs of longing and hopelessness flecked by elements of glam and doom metal. In “Far Behind,” also from the self-titled debut on Madonna’s Maverick Records, the act found its signature hit, sneaking into the pop top 20. Candlebox’s two subsequent albums kept them on the charts as post-grunge acts like Creed took over. The band reunited in the latter half of the following decade, picking up right where it left off, scoring a hit with the rock anthem “Stand.”
