Legendarily slow-and-low, these Pacific Northwest doom-grunge thunder gods were Kurt Cobain's favorite band.
The Melvins have the dubious honor of being one of the very first bands to which the term grunge can be aptly applied. The Aberdeen, Washington trio's formula is simple enough: take the fierce, riff-heavy crunch of punk and metal and slow it down. Combining the arena bombast of bands like Deep Purple and Kiss with the antiestablishment attitude of the emerging indie-rock scene of the 1980s, the Melvins offered a unique reworking and synthesis of previously disparate styles of loud, heavy music. Although the group has gone through several line-up changes since its inception, Kurt Cobain's favorite band will always be, at its core, guitarist/vocalist King Buzzo and drummer Dale Crover.
