The loudest crew out of Queens since Run-DMC, Onyx shot to platinum in '93 thanks to their signature anthem “Slam.”
The loudest rap crew out of Queens since Run-DMC, Onyx hit the national scene hard in 1993 with their debut BACDAFUCUP. Executive-produced by Jam Master Jay and propelled by the signature rowdy-rap single “Slam,” BACDAFUCUP achieved platinum status and gave way to a flurry of hyped-up Onyx-imitation records. In 1995, Onyx released ALL WE GOT IZ US, a darker, street-oriented LP, embraced by underground fans but lacking any radio singles. After their third effort, SHUT EM DOWN, which saw moderate commercial success thanks to the title single, Onyx left Def Jam. Sticky Fingaz and Fredro Starr released solo albums, while Fingaz also had a brief stint on HBO's THE WIRE.
