Houston trio who changed the hip-hop map with a controversial and grim storytelling style, dubbed "horrorcore."
Houston, TX hip-hop trio the Geto Boys--featuring Bushwick Bill, Scarface, and Willie D.--exploded onto the rap world in the early 1990s with a style that gleefully exposed the dark underbelly of modern life. With tracks delving unflinchingly into the nastiest, most lurid corners of human behavior, the group virtually defined the hip-hop subgenre that would eventually come to be known as "horrorcore." Along the way they proved to be highly influential on the 21st-century sound of crunk, and on Southern rap in general. The band even scored the unlikeliest of top 40 hits in 1991 with the story-song "Mind Playing Tricks on Me."
