Biography

While EPMD stood for Erick (Sermon) and Parrish (Smith) Making Dollars, and every one of their records featured the word "business" prominently in its title, the Long Island duo transcended cliche (or the mere pursuit of money). There was little fancy about EPMD; they were prolific, remarkably consistent, and simply better. The pair created a heavy funk based sound and a stance so self-assured as to seem effortless as Sermon unleashed a lyrically deceptive flow, uncompromising and undeniably brutal to anyone or thing in its path. Ironically, "Crossover," the act's 1992 evisceration of MCs who would sell out for a taste of pop chart glory, would become EPMD's biggest pop hit. While the act's star faded by mid-decade, their influence never did.
