Fugees

Hip-hop trio whose unique blend of pop, reggae, and soul with cerebral, spiritual rhymes stormed the nation in the late-1990s.

Biography

Formed in the late '80s in the New Jersey area, the Fugees signed to Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1993. Though the group's debut album, Blunted on Reality, was quite solid, it reflected a prevailing gangsta stance that may have been forced by the record label. The Fugees had obviously asserted control by the time of their second album, The Score. The album translated an intriguing blend of jazz-rap, R&B, and reggae into a huge success, hitting number one on the pop charts and selling over five million copies. By 2000, Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill each had issued successful solo albums, casting doubt on another Fugees release. ~ John Bush
