The Breeders

Kim Deal's post-Pixies off-kilter, edgy indie rock band scored critical raves and a surprise pop hit with "Cannonball."

Biography

The Breeders were initially conceived as a way for Pixies bassist Kim Deal and Throwing Muses guitarist Tanya Donelly to let out some suppressed creative energy and to take a break from being second bananas in their main bands. Taking their name from the group Deal led with her twin sister, Kelley (who would eventually replace Donelly), the Breeders combined the sparseness of Throwing Muses with the shifting dynamics and warped pop sensibilities of the Pixies. The band's second full-length, Last Splash, scored the group its biggest hit, [roviLink="MC"]"Cannonball." In 2008, after a long and complex hiatus, the group returned with Mountain Battles. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Heather Phares
