Influential L.A. punk band known for an exhilirating blend of punk, rockabilly and blues; their sound and style outlived the movement.
Though they came up in the early-'80s California punk scene, X presented an alternative to the jackhammer onslaught of hardcore punk. They combined Billy Zoom's '50s rock & roll-influenced guitar work with some rootsy touches and a fair amount of poetic imagery. The vocal blend of John Doe and Exene Cervenka, the Sonny & Cher of postpunk, was their calling card, and their unique, intelligent songs were the payoff.
