Gospel vocal group from the '80s who had crossover R&B hits as well.
In the sprawling Winans family gospel dynasty, the Winans (Marvin, Carvin, Michael, and the late Ronald) represent the early 1980s and the first crossover success for the family. Discovered and coached by Andrae Crouch, the vocal group was almost as popular on R&B radio and charts as they were in gospel circles. Although they recorded and performed in various permutations through the years (both before and after their tenure as the Winans), the core group stuck together until 1995. Ronald--who founded a successful Southern restaurant chain with Gladys Knight--died in 2005.
