Soulful singer delivers a rainstorm of modern gospel with a revival spirit and just a twist of hip-hop.
With a string of wildly popular albums (including 1993's Kirk Franklin & the Family, the first gospel debut to achieve platinum status), Kirk Franklin is one of the brightest stars in contemporary gospel music. The native Texan was raised by his Aunt Gertrude, a deeply religious woman who introduced her nephew to the Baptist faith. Drawing upon that religious background, Franklin organized the Family -- a 17-member urban choir -- and issued a number of gospel albums in the '90s and 2000s. Many of these Grammy-nominated releases, including 1997's God's Property and 1998's The Nu Nation Project, also fared very well on the R&B and Pop charts. ~ Sandra Brennan
