3rd Bass

3rd Bass proved that white hip-hop didn’t have to be a diluted, commercial bastardization.

Biography

Rappers Pete Nice and MC Serch were among the first to prove that white hip-hop didn’t have to be a diluted, commercial bastardization of the genre. With production from Prince Paul and the Bomb Squad, their 1989 debut, THE CACTUS, displayed a playful, irreverent lyrical approach epitomized by the single, “The Gas Face.” DERELICTS OF DIALECT (1991) furthered 3rd Bass’s industry prowess, garnering publicity for a feud with Vanilla Ice (see “Pop Goes the Weasel”). After their break-up, Serch worked as an A&R for Wild Pitch records, discovering Nas among other artists, and released a 1992 solo LP while Nice and Rich released a side project in 1993.
