Biz Markie

New York-based rap singer and human beatbox who found a niche market with humorous, witty songs.

Biography

Biz Markie, born Marcel Hall in New York City, is commonly known as the Clown Prince of Rap. Discovered by Marley Marl, Biz released his debut album in 1988. The following year, his goofy, out-of-tune wailing on "Just A Friend" made him a bona fide pop star. However, his third album featured a sample of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again Naturally" that resulted in a precedent-setting lawsuit and big financial troubles. Biz continued recording into the '90s, but never quite regained his former momentum. Nevertheless, his humor-filled sound was hugely influential to the Beastie Boys and many others.
