Soul singer who returned to her gospel roots and succeeded in both genres.
Like many talented soul-music performers, Candi Staton started her career as a gospel singer; however, unlike many of her contemporaries, Staton returned to the church just as success was headed her way. The secular tracks Staton recorded with Rick Hall at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, between 1969 and '73 are considered some of the most criminally overlooked soul recordings of the era. They were given a loving reissue in 2004 and helped reintroduce Staton to the pop-music public. Despite 2006's secular comeback album, HIS HANDS, Staton stayed with her faith, and remained one of gospel music's most popular and consistent performers.
