The Shadows

Former Cliff Richard accompanists who had their own instrumental surf and rock & roll hits in the early '60s.

Biography

The Shadows were one of the quintessential British instrumental groups, and along with the American band the Ventures and the Swedish group the Spotnicks, one of the most popular instrumental groups in the world. Formed in early 1958 by Indian-born singer/guitarist Harry Webb, drummer Terry Smart, and guitarist Norman Mitham in Chesthunt, Hertfordshire, the band went through a handful of monikers, members, and styles before settling on Cliff Richard & the Shadows in 1959. The band hit its stride in the '60s with hits like [roviLink="MC"]"Apache," [roviLink="MC"]"Guitar Tango," [roviLink="MC"]"Man of Mystery," [roviLink="MC"]"Geronimo," and [roviLink="MC"]"Foot Tapper." ~ Bruce Eder
