L.A. outfit created slap-happy pop punk with ample hooks, buoyed by the sultrily scratchy vocals of Kim Shattuck.
While the Muffs ascended to the big time during the early-1990s pop punk explosion led by Green Day, the L.A. band's brand of three-minute rock was far more varied and complex. Led by the seductively scratchy vocals of Kim Shattuck, the Muffs drew from greaser rock, girl groups, and garage, as well as the standard Buzzcocks and Ramones. While their diversity may have denied the band as wide an audience as some contemporaries, the Muffs steadily built a rabid underground fanbase, and continued to evolve long after the major label spotlight swung elsewhere.
