New Edition

Hitmaking teen pop group evolved into mature R&B vocal act by 1990s, spawning many spinoffs.

Biography

In the mid-'80s, the Jackson 5-inspired teen group New Edition laid much of the groundwork for the fusion of hip-hop and R&B known as new jack swing. In fact, after New Edition drifted apart, all of its members had at least some significant success outside the group as part of the new jack movement, which helped ensure that their original incarnation would be remembered for much more than the bubblegum urban soul that made their name. Their debut single, released in 1983 when the members ranged in age from 13 to 15, [roviLink="MC"]"Candy Girl" was a smash, topping the R&B charts. ~ Steve Huey
