Pioneering Czech jazz fusion keyboardist best known for his television scores.
Two generations of fans have loved Jan Hammer's music--those who missed out on his Mahavishnu Orchestra years probably know him from his mega-selling MIAMA VICE soundtrack work. The Czech Republic-born child prodigy won a scholarship to Berklee College Of Music in Boston in 1968, and played with artists such as Elvin Jones and Sarah Vaughan before gaining widespread recognition as the keyboard player of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Hammer kicked off a solo career in '75 with a concept album based on the creation of the Earth, and shortly after collaborated with Jeff Beck on the acclaimed '76 outing WIRED. In the mid-'80s Hammer was hired to compose the score for the MIAMI VICE TV show, since then has balanced soundtrack work with solo projects, and has composed music for computer games.
