The Church

Crack purveyors of dreamy, lightly psychedelic pop; had a big hit with "Under the Milky Way."

Biography

This long-running Australian band has enjoyed revered cult status and top-of-the-charts success in alternate measures, but never varies in the quality or passion of their music. They're crack purveyors of dreamy, lightly psychedelic pop with jangling guitars and enough strum-and-drone to prevent things from getting too pretty. The peak of their U.S. fame was the lovely mid-career single "Under the Milky Way," released in 1988. Like any good marriage, members of the Church have kept their union strong by having outside interests--leader Steve Kilby and guitarist Marty Willson-Piper have robust solo discographies and outside collaborations, and Kilby is a painter and published poet.
