Ex-Orange Juice singer's mature, soulful pop arrangements continued his fame, went briefly supernova with "A Girl Like You."
The Scottish jangle-pop band Orange Juice planted many seeds in the 1980s, influencing a generation (or two) of indie bands with their unique mix of spry insouciance, punky DIY spirit, and sultry soul. Leader Edwyn Collins went solo in 1989, bringing a polished and mature sound to his singing and arrangements, and enjoyed an international hit with the Motown-ish "A Girl Like You" in '94. He has also produced albums for the Proclaimers, Vic Godard, and other acts. In 2005, Collins suffered from a cerebral hemorrhage that required six months of hospitalization and a long road to rehabilitation, but by 2007 was working on a new album.
