Modern English

British band famous for "I Melt With You;" quietly new wave innovators.

Biography

Led by the deeply elegant vocals of Robbie Grey, Colchester, England based group Modern English formed in 1979 and swiftly became mainstays on the airwaves in the early days of MTV. While best known for their 1982 hit “I Melt With You,” a unsinkable piece of confectionary new wave pop befitting the era, much of the band’s recordings betrayed an arty dance-rock blend that looked equally to Roxy Music and Joy Division. Although the band is often remembered as the consummate one-hit wonder, Grey continued to record with various incarnations of the band for decades.
