Giant Sand

Influential alt country band whose sound evolved into a crisp mix of swing, country, rock and beatnik lyricism.

Biography

Giant Sand has been crafting a singularly quirky brand of desert rock since the mid-1980s. Based in Tucson, and bearing the stark emptiness of the Arizona desert in its sound, the band revolves around singer/songwriter Howe Gelb and his twisted version of Americana. Over the years, Gelb's cohorts have included Rainer Ptacek, the members of Calexico, Victoria Williams, and others, and he's recorded under a variety of guises (his own name, OP8, Band of Blacky Ranchette). After years of low-profile releases, Giant Sand found new life, a new label, and a wider audience with the 2000 "comeback" album CHORE OF ENCHANTMENT.
