Master of dark Americana who kicked off his career as he neared age 50.
Singer/songwriter Johnny Dowd didn't begin his recording career until he was nearly 50, at which time his dark Americana sound began to gain cachet among indie-rock fans. His debut album, 1997's WRONG SIDE OF MEMPHIS turned heads with its blend of lo-fi production, alt-country, quirky avant-rock edge, and a twisted Southern-gothic lyrical sensibility that often indulged in camp and black humor. The album kicked off a consistent career for Dowd, who finally launched himself fully into recording and performing after a lifetime of day jobs.
