R&B outfit emerged with a funk-disco sound in ‘70s, but found success in the ‘80s with adult contemporary ballads.
Atlantic Starr emerged in the 1970s as a large ensemble with a funk- and disco-influenced sound. The band enjoyed moderate success in this incarnation, but began to score R&B chart hits in the ‘80s (including “When Love Calls” and “Circles”). Line-up changes led to a more adult contemporary direction, and 1985’s AS THE BAND TURNS earned Atlantic Starr their first crossover hit with “Secret Lovers.” The band built on this success with 1987’s ALL IN THE NAME OF LOVE, containing the ballad and #1 pop and R&B smash “Always.” Further line-up and label changes found the band losing commercial standing, but Atlantic Starr continued to release and record steadily through the ‘90s and 2000s.
