New Edition splinter group scored megahits in early-'90s, led the New Jack Swing charge.
At the very least, Bell Biv Devoe is a testament to the starpower that resulted from 1980s boy band New Edition. The trio left New Edition in the late '80s and went on to become one of the most successful New Jack Swing ensembles of the day. Their debut, POISON, was a smash and kept them competitive with fellow New Edition alumni Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant. Though BBD never repeated the success of their debut, their mark on pop music extended well beyond their own sound, as they were instrumental in launching the career of Boyz II Men, one of the top-selling R&B acts of the '90s. BBD continued to record and perform into the new millennium, and they participated in both New Edition reunions.
