Brazilian band blended pop packaging and avant-garde weirdness during the late 1960s as part of the Tropicalia movement.
Os Mutantes grew out of Brazil's 1960s revolutionary Tropicalia arts movement, influenced by key figures of '60s rock, like the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, avant-garde composers like John Cage, and Brazilian musical styles both contemporary and traditional. The band was a truly odd mix of pop whimsy and conceptual weirdness. Although the Mutantes played a key role in the counterculture happenings of '60s Brazil, they remained in obscurity until the 1990s, when they were championed by the likes of Beck, Stereolab, and David Byrne. The band got together for a brief reunion tour in the early 2000s.
