The Rapture

NYC quartet that fired the dance-punk shot heard round the indie world in the late '90s.

Biography

The Rapture were formed in early 1998 by drummer Vito Roccoforte and guitarist/vocalist Luke Jenner. The whimsical indie group had toured extensively by the time it recorded 1999's Mirror for Gravity. More touring ensued and the band eventually relocated to New York City. After some more touring, the band recorded a six-song EP for Sub Pop. Thanks to their sloppy brand of scratchy post-post-punk, the Rapture were hailed as a forerunner of the post-punk revival that was taking place in the early 2000s. Subsequent records like Echoes, Pieces of the People We Love, and Tapes carried the group well into the 21st century. ~ Andy Kellman
