Jagged, often melodic, lo-fi post-rock, the indie rockers slowly burbled from cult sensations to unlikely alterna-pop stars.
Modest Mouse formed in 1993 and cut their debut single for K Records. Following a move to Up, the band issued two 1996 LPs, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About and Interstate 8. After returning to K, they released The Fruit That Ate Itself; its follow-up, The Lonesome Crowded West, was a breakthrough, and in the wake of a major-label bidding war, they signed to Epic. Their major-label debut, The Moon & Antarctica, appeared in 2000. Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004) was a Top 40 hit. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, featuring Johnny Marr, followed in 2007. ~ Jason Ankeny
