Late 1980s pop star brought back to fame through an internet phenomenon 20 years later.
In the late 1980s, hits like "Never Gonna Give You Up" and "Together Forever" made Rick Astley one of the most successful members of the Stock-Aitken-Waterman hit factory, alongside Bananarama and Kylie Minogue. Some twenty years after the British singer's initial success, his career was unexpectedly revived by the internet phenomenon known as "rickrolling," or tricking someone into watching a YouTube video of Astley's ultra-catchy 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up." Astley professed to be amused by the meme, which also led to the now-retired singer winning the Best Act Ever award at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards.
