Although ostensibly an alt-country band, Chicago's Wilco has experimented with a variety of pop forms.
Wilco rose from the ashes of the seminal roots rockers Uncle Tupelo, who disbanded in 1994. While Jay Farrar, one of the group's two singer/songwriters, went on to form the band Son Volt, his ex-partner Jeff Tweedy established Wilco along with the remaining members of Tupelo's final incarnation, which included Ken Coomer, John Stirratt, Max Johnston, and Jay Bennett. The band released a string of increasingly experimental collections of country, pop, and rock tunes, beginning with 1995's A.M. and peaking with 2002's epic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, its equally impressive follow-up A Ghost Is Born in 2004, and the pastoral Sky Blue Sky in 2007. Avant guitarist Nels Cline joined Wilco in 2004. ~ Jason Ankeny & Zac Johnson
