Indie band from California plays fractured, quirky noise pop with a rock edge and a surprising poignancy.
Deerhoof is a San Francisco-based post-rock outfit that balances charming whimsicality (thanks mainly to bassist Satomi Matsuzaki's childlike warbling) with unpredictable rhythms, scratchy guitars, and bits of sonic and melodic weirdness. The overall sound is inventive, spontaneous, and sometimes oddly poignant. Greg Saunier and Rob Fisk formed Deerhoof in San Francisco in 1994, but things didn't take flight until bassist Matsuzaki joined the group; through many lineup changes, she has been the keystone. Still an indie phenomenon, the band's most acclaimed release so far has been 2007's FRIEND OPPORTUNITY.
