Soul-jazz-funk band whose slick sound spawned hits and shook the booties of hippies, club rats, and Napoleon Dynamite.
With a blend of house rhythms and '70s-era soul/funk, the British group Jamiroquai became one of the most recognizable proponents of the acid jazz movement during the early '90s. Led by singer/songwriter Jason Kay, the band signed with Sony Records and issued their debut album, Emergency on Planet Earth, in 1993. The album peaked at the top of the British charts and paved the way for a long career, which included Jamiroquai's world-wide hit "Virtual Insanity," the song's accompanying award-winning music video, and a string of wildly popular albums (including Synkronized and A Funk Odyssey). ~ Greg Prato
