ESG

Utterly original deep funk group formed in New York City in the late '70s, proved a huge infleunce on post-punk and hip-hop.

Biography

In the early-'80s, the Scroggins sisters emerged from the South Bronx as pioneers of the punk-funk movement. Recording for hip NYC indie 99 Records, ESG's minimalist funk grooves found favor with both post-punk audiences and dance clubbers, and famed Factory Records producer Martin Hannett brought them to England to record some seminal tracks. After their initial brush with success, ESG fell into obscurity, but their songs were sampled (legally and otherwise) by a long list of successful hip-hop artists.
